Israel Adesanya climbs six places in UFC pound for pound rankings

In the latest UFC News, Israel Adesanya defeated Robert Whittaker in the main event of UFC 243 in a Middleweight title unification bout. The Last Stylebender knocked out Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker in the second round, becoming the undisputed UFC Middleweight Champion. His win earned him a Performance of the Night award.

After his impressive performance, Israel Adesanya has gained a foothold in the UFC Rankings. The Last Stylebender has rocketed up six places to the number 8 spot in the UFC pound for pound rankings while Whittaker has dropped down five places to the number 14 spot.

UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones remains the pound-for-pound king ahead of UFC lightweight champion Nurmagomedov. Henry Cejudo, Stipe Miocic, and Amanda Nunes are placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Adesanya relocated to Auckland, New Zealand, and began training at City Kickboxing. Adesanya made his professional debut in 2012. Thereafter, he fought in Hong Kong, Australia, and China over the next half a decade before he was finally signed by the UFC.

Adesanya, who only made his UFC debut last year, is now one of the most popular fighters in the company and he is on his way to becoming a superstar. The undefeated Adesanya is known for his unconventional and free-flowing style of fighting. The Nigerian-born Kiwi is slated to make the first defense of his 185lbs title against fellow-undefeated fighter Paula Costa.

Israel Mobolaji Adesanya (born 22 July 1989) is a Nigerian-New Zealander professional Mixed Martial Artist. Adesanya was born in Lagos, Nigeria. Inspired by Martial Arts film Ong-Bak starring world-renowned Muay Thai fighter Tony Jaa, he started training in kickboxing at the age of 18. Adesanya relocated to Auckland, New Zealand at the age of 21, Adesanya relocated to Auckland, New Zealand, and began training at City Kickboxing. Adesanya made his professional debut in 2012. Thereafter, he fought in Hong Kong, Australia, and China over the next half a decade before he was finally signed by the UFC.

Adesanya signed with the UFC in December 2017. On his debut, he beat Rob Wilkinson via TKO in the second round at UFC 221 in February 2018. He also won the Performance of the Night bonus for that fight. Thereafter he picked up victories over Marvin Vettori, Brad Tavares, and Derek Brunson at UFC on Fox 29, UFC 230 and UFC 234 respectively.

Adesanya then faced his idol ‘The Spider’ at UFC 234 on February 10, 2019. He beat Silva via unanimous decision and took home the Fight of the Night award. Adesanya faced Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236 for the interim UFC Middleweight Championship. He won via unanimous decision and won a Fight of the Night award for his impressive showing.

Israel got his nickname of The Last Stylebender from the popular American action-adventure animated series franchise Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Last Stylebender has rocketed up six places to the number 8 spot in the UFC pound for pound rankings while Whittaker has dropped down five places to the number 14 spot.
