A railroad vehicle is one that can operate on the conventional road as well as on rail tracks. In most cases, they are road vehicles that have been converted for use on the rail tracks. The superstructure can be of any kind and one must choose the vehicle that is suited for our purpose.
Operations of train road vehicle
The train road vehicles keep their normal tires but have additional rail wheels that help them negotiate rail tracks. Movement is usually through the conventional tires, the flanged wheels are free-rolling. They help perform a specific selection of railway services including maintenance and renewals of the overhead line equipment, track welding, railway track renovation, vegetation control, and track cleaning. They also perform fire fighting operations, rescue work, and re-railing services, machining, and painting work.
Use of overhead platforms
For overhead lines installation and repair services, the trucks are fitted with overhead platforms that are scissors or articulated. It might be an equipment locker or a workshop cabinet. These modular production systems have interchangeable frames or self-loading drum carriers. It is also possible for trams and light rail vehicles to have glass fiber reinforced polyester cabins. The vehicle helps install the required equipment at the elevated places.
Scissor type platform
The scissor-type elevating platform enables unlimited rotation about its axis. It comes with good loading capacity and size and enough horizontal reach to do the maintenance work on catenary lines. The platform is remotely controlled so that it can be controlled by a panel in an emergency. In other models, the boom platform with good side reach and size has adequate loading capacity on the platform for doing the needed work. Extra equipment used
More equipment such as cupboards, shelves, workbenches, insulated staff rooms, and extra seats are available on demand. The hydraulic leveling system keeps the platform always level even when there is extreme railway cant. On standard gauges, all the platforms can be operated without outriggers as this doesn’t affect the traffic in the opposite lane. The vehicles are used for shoveling and fork lifting when not working on the rail tracks.
It has a flash butt welder container used for welding in actual field conditions. Hydraulically driven double axel rail gears remain located behind the road axles. You also have optional remote control drive capabilities along with parking, service, and emergency brakes. Many of the vehicles have a railway air brake system mounted in the cabin so that the driver can release or apply the brake during shunting operations.
Vehicles with superstructures
Superstructure equipped rail-road vehicles to have many capabilities they have a container, tiltable side plates, and other superstructures along with a locking mechanism to maintain the needed height of the front axle tires from the rail level. The superstructures can be hydraulic loading cranes, sprayer mobile workshops, water sprinklers, loading platforms, and re-railing equipment with the rescue vehicle.
